A little tangential but … It’s more than just “said” that such verses exist.
The similar verse in Guthrie’s handwritten composition, dated Feb. 23, 1940, and printed in Joe Klein’s biography of Guthrie, is:
Was a big high wall there that tried to stop me A sign was painted said: Private Property But on the back side it didn’t say nothing – This land was made for you and me.
And Guthrie sings the verse in one of the versions he recorded for Moe Asch.
